A slyly subversive reinvention of the French rural drama by the director of Stranger by the Lake.

Alain Guiraudie, director of the brilliant Stranger by the Lake, constantly upends expectations in the slyly subversive Misericordia. Opening like a conventional French rural drama, the film mutates through dark thriller and romantic melodrama to absurdist comedy, consistently unpredictable and entertaining at every turn. Jérémie returns to his hometown for the funeral of his former boss, the village baker. Martine, the man's widow, insists that he stays a few days, much to the annoyance of her combative son Vincent who thinks he has designs on Martine. He is actually more interested in Vincent’s burly friend Walter.

"The filmmaker is an expert at creating a distinct sense of place and Misericordia’s woodland setting is viscerally atmospheric, and looks stunning too thanks to cinematographer Claire Mathon and her striking autumnal palette. Guiraudie is a masterful filmmaker and this is a delightfully unpredictable watch." - James Kleinmann, Queer Review
