The incredible creations of animators from 16 countries are presented over two programmes in our major international competition for animated short films.
The second World Animation Competition programme features 10 more visionary shorts from across the globe, spanning skilful artistry in 2D, stop-motion and experimental forms of the genre. From the awe-inspiring depths of Brazilian folklore to serene Portuguese seashores, each film encapsulates something uniquely profound within the animated art-form, celebrating an array of International talent and storytelling. The programme is bookended by the work of animation industry icon Florence Miailhe and her elegant yet sorrowful new film Papillon, as well as the multi-award-winning festival favourite Tennis, Oranges by Sean Pecknold.
Papillon
As a man swims in the sea, memories from his past begin to surface. Each one, from his childhood to recent times, is linked to water. In this story we see his last swim, one that will take him from pools of happiness, to sorrow and emotions beyond retention.

Matta and Matto
In the pastel palettes of Matto and Matto’s world, touch is prohibited. The pair offer a sanctuary for the lonely inhabitants of their dystopian home at the Hotel Vaip, where cravings are satisfied and surpassed, but only for visitors who pay the price.
