Winner: Cross My Heart and Hope to Die by Sam Manacsa
Jury Statement on Winner: A film of impressive intensity and drama that lives intimately in the world of its characters. Unflinching in its approach to the subject of exploitative labour, the film rests on the fragile balance between hopelessness and hope. While the film is poignant and tragic, the empathy that the characters elicit lingers beyond the violence they face. A very personal directorial vision that is sure to make a mark in years to come.
Special Mention: Nothing But Shadows by Kathy Mitrani
Jury Statement on Special Mention: A gentle yet powerful film that explores grief in unexpected ways. It meanders delicately between mundane reality, superstition, fear of death, and uncertainty. Absences become palpable, as the personal loss of the protagonist is entangled with those of strangers long gone. A heartfelt, atmospheric, and visceral work with a playful approach to form.
