Training the next generation of UK filmmakers, supporting young people aged 16 to 19 to develop the commercial and cultural knowledge and skills to help break into film. No experience is necessary.


What are the BFI Film Academy Short Courses?

If you're 16-19 years old, enthusiastic about film and want to learn the skills, knowledge and contacts to bring your stories to life then this is your chance to break into film.

Now in its 13th year, our fully accessible course includes sessions delivered by expert industry mentors, hands-on filmmaking experience and the chance to meet and collaborate with like-minded aspiring filmmakers.

BFI Film Academy short courses offer training for every role involved in filmmaking. You will be making a short film from start to finish, including writing, producing, editing and presenting your work on the big screen to gain the NCFE Level 2 qualification "Preparing to Work in the Film Industry".

Applications are currently closed but information about BFI Film Academy 2025 will be announced later in the year. 

BFI Film Academy 2024 Premiere

In early December 2024 the BFI Film Academy's Leeds and Bradford cohorts hosted a premiere celebration, screening their outstanding short films and behind-the-scenes projects to an audience of over 160. The event, featuring panel interviews and Q&A sessions, was a resounding success thanks to the dedication of participants and support from mentors and industry professionals.

Costs


Short courses are free, however there are bursaries available if child care/travel costs are an issue. If you would like more information about the course please email eleanor.hodson@leeds.gov.uk about the BFI Film Academy short courses.

 

About the BFI Film Academy short courses


The BFI Film Academy short course contributes to a core aim of the BFI’s 2023 strategy which aims to provide everyone with the opportunity to build a lifelong relationship with film; to create clear progression paths for talented young people and to ensure that film is celebrated and explored in formal education. The BFI Film Academy short courses is supported by the Department for Education in England, the National Lottery, Northern Ireland Screen and Screen Scotland.
