Cinema On The Square 2024: Full Programme Revealed

We’re proud to launch the second edition of Cinema on the Square, the open-air summer cinema that celebrates movies and music on the big concert stage screen in Millennium Square.

Last year, Leeds International Film Festival launched our first ever Cinema on the Square, screening Roald Dahl's Matilda the Musical, Stand By Me, Summer of Soul, and finishing with a rare screening of the musical Daft Punk anime, Interstella 5555. Our second edition will take place across three full days (July 24 - 26) with an even bigger selection of films for all audiences, across new curated collections.

This year’s lineup includes Classic Concerts, featuring the energy and excitement of live performances with the newly restored Talking Heads’ Stop Making Sense and Aretha Franklin’s Amazing Grace. Family Films, in partnership with Leeds Young Film Festival (LYFF), showcases our favourite movies for all ages including Wonka, Encanto (singalong), and Ratatouille.

Our Paris Stories strand will celebrate the 2024 Paris Olympics with a selection of films capturing the diverse depictions of Paris onscreen, from the whimsy and romance of films like Moulin Rouge! and Amelie, to its concrete suburbs and alternative music scenes as seen in the explosive La haine, and powerful coming-of-age story, Girlhood. We’ll also be offering a time capsule into 60’s Paris with the French New Wave classic, Cléo From 5 to 7, by Agnes Verde.

The festival culminates with our Friday Finale; Greta Gerwig's acclaimed blockbuster, Barbie, starring Margot Robbie.

The films will be screened on the outdoor concert screen in Millennium Square as part of their Summer Series, Millennium Square's annual concert series of outdoor gigs from world-renowned blockbuster acts and emerging artists. The open-air setting adds a unique ambiance, embracing the communal joy of both cinema and music.

Cinema on the Square runs from July 24-26. Tickets are on sale now. To see the full lineup and book tickets, visit our What’s On page. For more information please visit our Cinema on the Square FAQ.
